The short answer
Use ZIP when almost anyone must open the result. Use 7Z when compression ratio, AES-256, and filename encryption matter more. Recipient compatibility should guide team workflows.
Compatibility
ZIP is recognized by nearly every desktop and mobile system. 7Z needs a compatible archiver but exposes more advanced settings and stronger compression options.
Size and speed
7Z with LZMA2 often performs well on similar files, documents, and application resources. ZIP is lightweight for creation, random access, and exchange. Already compressed media may show little difference.
Encryption
Legacy ZipCrypto is compatible but weak. ZIP AES and 7Z AES-256 are better for sensitive material, while 7Z can also hide filenames.
Recommended uses
- Unknown recipient device: ZIP.
- Backups, source trees, and many small files: 7Z.
- Native system preview: ZIP.
