Encryption and passwords

Set passwords and AES-256 encryption for supported formats and follow password-safety guidance.

  1. 01

    Choose a format

7Z supports AES-256 and filename encryption; confirm ZIP AES compatibility with recipients.

  2. 02

    Create a strong password

Use at least 12 random characters or a longer passphrase and avoid reuse.

  3. 03

    Configure encryption

Select the algorithm and enable filename encryption when names must remain private.

  4. 04

    Test compatibility

Close and reopen the result, then test on the intended receiving device.

  5. 05

    Separate delivery channels

Do not send the archive and its password in the same message or channel.

  6. 06

    Store the password safely

Strong encryption has no universal backdoor; recovery can be slow and is never guaranteed.
