Understand the error
CRC errors mean extracted data does not match the recorded checksum. Unexpected-end errors suggest truncation, missing-volume messages indicate an incomplete set, and a wrong password can also appear as a data error.
Start with non-destructive checks
Keep an untouched copy, compare size and checksum, test the archive, and verify every multipart name and size.
Re-download first
For internet downloads, obtaining a clean copy is more reliable than repair. Avoid unstable proxies and active sync writes, then test from a local disk.
Recover intact content
Some formats can skip damaged files and continue. Extract to a separate folder and verify every result rather than treating a completed job as proof of integrity.
Limits of repair
- Repair may rebuild a ZIP directory structure.
- Missing or overwritten bytes cannot be recreated.
- Damaged encrypted data is usually harder to recover.
- Important data needs multiple backups, not only repair tools.
